State govt slammed

By A Correspondent

DULIAJAN, Nov 22 - After the State government excluded Sati Sadhani Diwas from the list of 2020 government holidays, reactions have come in.

The State Cabinet, on November 20, approved 35 holidays excluding Sati Sadhani Diwas. Reacting to the exclusion of April 21, which is known as Sati Sadhani Diwas in the State, the All Assam Chutiya Students Union (AACSU) Dibrugarh District Committee president, Jitu Saikia and general secretary Sanjeev Chutiya stated through a press release on Thursday that the Assam Government had promised that a State holiday will be declared on Sati Sadhani Diwas in previous deliberations with AACSU. But the State government did not keep the commitment made to the student organisation. The AACSU stated that Sati Sadhani was not only a warrior of the Chutiya community, but a symbol of courage, self respect and patriotism from the Northeast.

The AACSU leaders further added that Sati Sadhani was Asias first woman commander who united female warriors against enemy forces. By not declaring Sati Sadhani Diwas as a holiday, the government has insulted the whole Chutiya community of Assam, the press release added. The student organisation was also irked at the intention of Assam Government, as it has declared Chhat Puja as a government holiday, ignoring Sati Sadhani Diwas. AACSUs Dibrugarh district president Jitu Saikia slammed the Sonowal Government for not showing any serious responsibility towards the Chutiya community. The committee gave the State government a deadline of one month to declare Sati Sadhani Diwas as a State holiday, threatening a massive series of protests, if it is not fulfilled.
