GUWAHATI, March 15 The Assam Government wrote to the Government of India on March 2 for investigation into the misappropriation of funds in NC Hills Autonomous Council after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) wrote to it suggesting a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 22.

In response to a question by Dr Kamala Kanta Kalita (AGP), the Government today tabled the letter written to the Centre as well as the MHA letter in the House.

The letter written by SC Das, Principal Secretary, Home and Political Department of the Government of Assam to the Secretary of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension of the Government of India, said after careful consideration, the State Government has decided to refer the matter to the Government of India for investigation of misappropriation of funds by public servants in NC Hills and for taking action as per law.

The letter gave an account of the events leading to the registration of a case by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The letter said that the NIA had already filed chargesheet against 14 persons. Now it has come to light from the chargesheet submitted by the NIA about the involvement of public servants in NC Hills Autonomous Council in misappropriation of funds. The MHA, in a letter dated February 22, also requested the State Government to consider recommending the investigation of the matter under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act by the CBI.

Meanwhile, the MHA letter, addressed to the State Chief Secretary, said that during the investigation of the case relating to militant-politician nexus by the NIA, the involvement of public servants of NC Hills Autonomous Council in misappropriation of funds and their misconduct had been revealed. The MHA said that the State Government may consider recommending of the investigation of the matter under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act by the CBI. The letter further made it clear that the letter was issued with the approval of the Union Home Minister.
