State girl dies in Delhi road mishap

NEW DELHI, Sept 28 - Kaayum Pegu, a Miranda House student hailing from Assam who met with a road mishap in Noida on Friday night, succumbed to her injuries today.

Three of her university mates were also injured in that road accident.

Kaayum (20) breathed her last in the hospital this morning as all efforts to revive her failed. She was in ICU since Friday. Multiple fractures and internal bleeding were stated to be the causes of her death. Post-mortem was conducted today in Noida after which embalming will be done in AIIMS, before her body is flown to Guwahati tomorrow morning.

The Government of Assam has decided to bear all the cost, said a close family sources.

Accompanied by three of her Delhi University friends, Kaayum was returning from a birthday party from Greater Noida, when the Uber cab they were travelling in collided with a parked truck near Sector 16 A early on Friday morning. The driver, reportedly drunk, was over-speeding when he lost control of his vehicle. He fled from the spot after the accident. The impact critically injured Pegu who was thrown into the windscreen from the back seat, where she was seated.

A passer-by rushed all the four students to the nearby Kailash Hospital.

The injured has been identified as Tanuz Kalita (19), a student of SGTB Khalsa College; Siddharth Pathak (20) of Swami Shraddhanand College and Akshara Badola (20) of Mata Sundari College. Pathak and Badola are recuperating in the hospital and are out of danger, while Kalita has been discharged, hospital staff said.

The driver was later arrested. Police produced him in court which released him on bail. An FIR of rash and negligent driving was registered against the driver who has been identified by Noida Police as Viresh.
