DERGAON, May 29 Former State Santosh Trophy and Assam Police footballer Sirajuddin Ahmed died at his Jelehuagaon residence here at around 1.30 pm today. He was 50.

The dreaded left winger Sirajuddin was a regular playing member of the Assam Police football team during 1970s and 80s. He was one of the leading players of the Assam Police team along with international Gilbertson Sangma, which won the Bordoloi Trophy in 1981. He received serious injuries in 1986 which forced him to stay away from playing football.

He was suffering from kidney related disease and died without proper treatment due to financial hardship. Neither the State Govt nor the Assam Police offered him financial assistance during his struggling days.

His death was widely mourned by several organisations like Greater Dergaon Consumer Awareness and Protection Forum, AASHRAY, Progressive Career Counselling etc. His former team mate Gilbertson Sangma termed his death as a great loss to the State.
