State flood situation still grim

GUWAHATI, Aug 1 - Flood situation in the State continued to remain grim today with nearly 11,00,618 people of 1,659 villages under 62 revenue circles of 21 districts are still reeling under floodwaters. Today, three cases of flood-related death have been reported from Barpeta (one case) and Dhubri (two cases), said the official flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) here this evening.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger levels at Neamatighat and Dhubri, while Dhansiri is flowing above its danger level at Numaligarh and the Beki is flowing at Road Bridge, said the flood bulletin.

The districts which are still affected by flood include Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Nagaon, South Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong and Chirang.

Of these districts, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri and Morigaon are found to be the worst affected ones. In each of these districts, over one lakh people are affected by flood. Till date, 1, 25, 812 people are taking shelter in 273 relief camps and 52 relief distribution centres. The NDRF and SDRF are extending help to the district administrations in evacuating the affected people to safe places, said the bulletin.
