NEW DELHI, Dec 26 Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Jayanta Narayan Choudhury, an IPS officer belonging to Assam cadre of 1978 batch has been appointed as Director General, National Security Guard (NSG).
Official sources said that Choudhurys appointment would come into effect from the date of his joining the post and till his superannuation on May, 31, 2015, or until further orders, whichever comes first.
Consequently, Arvind Ranjan, DG, NSG has been appointed as Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). He will continue to hold the charge of the post of DG, NSG in addition to DG,CISF till the joining of Choudhury.
The DGP of Assam Police on Thursday called on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to brief him about the prevailing law-and-order situation in the State, perhaps for the last time.
Later, he told newsmen that the internal security situation in Assam though stable, was a matter of concern. Though a number of insurgent outfits are operating in the State, the police too are working to curb their activities.
He referred to the successful operation conducted by the State police to rescue NHPC general manager, AK Agarwal recently.
About reports of the insurgent groups joining hands to put up a joint fight, the DGP said that the ground realities were quite different.
He further added that a number of ULFA cadres disenchanted with the leaders of the anti-talk faction, are keen to surrender and return to the mainstream, but are unable to do so because of pressure from commander-in-chief, Paresh Barua.
Choudhury, who had a long stint with the Intelligence Bureau (IB), is an expert on Left Wing extremism before he was selected for the post of Assam DGP.
