GUWAHATI, Aug 23 - Contrary to what the health department had predicted, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the State has climbed to 6.77 per cent.

On Saturday, 1.560 new COVID-19 cases were detected out of 23,040 tests done, the positivity rate being 6.77 per cent. A day before, it was 5.12 per cent.

The maximum number of cases were detected in Kamrup Metro district (352), followed by Jorhat (137) and Kamrup (104).

The positivity rate had come down from 18 per cent on July 25 to 4.5 per cent on August 9. For the last few days, it was above 5 per cent.

There has also been inconsistency in the number of tests being conducted in the State every day. While on August 12 it crossed one lakh, the number has been varying between 20,000 and 50,000 each day.

Given that the State is recording around 2,000 cases every day, the coronavirus tally may cross one lakh in the next week. Assam is currently tenth in the number of coronavirus cases recorded among the Indian states.

Till last night, the number of positive cases stood at 89,468. The number of discharged patients is 67,641, while 234 have succumbed to the infection, according to the government figures.
