State COVID-19 cases surge to 1,756

GUWAHATI, June 3 - As many as 195 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam on Wednesday, as the State�s coronavirus cases surged to 1,756. Over 60 new cases were from Dhubri district alone.

Meanwhile, 76 patients were also discharged during the day from various hospitals.

Among the new patients was another doctor who was looking after a quarantine centre at Lakhimpur. Officials said Dr Hashid Zaman had been serving as facility in-charge at the OPD College quarantine centre in Panigaon near Lakhimpur since May 25. All the medical staff and security personnel posted at the quarantine centre were tested for COVID-19 following detection of positive cases among the inmates.

Dr Zaman is among over fifteen health workers who have tested positive for the virus so far in the State.

On the other hand, the second floor of the medicine block of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh has been sealed for containment after two positive COVID-19 cases were detected in the wards of the block yesterday.

In Guwahati, Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika today paid surprise visits to check if the health guidelines were being followed by those put on home quarantine.

�All the people whom we visited were at home. We also checked if the multipurpose workers and police were doing their assigned duties,� Hazarika said.

There are around 2,500 people under home quarantine in the city.

Meanwhile, as part of the Vande Bharat Mission a repatriation flight from Russia landed at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar here with 37 passengers late last night. Another flight from Ukraine is expected to arrive later tonight.
