State Cong leader suggests COVID-19 fund

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, March 28 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) general secretary Pankaj Borbora has appealed to all party members across Assam to contribute just Rs 100 each towards mobilising a COVID-19 fund with the objective of aiding the government in its effort to meet the unprecedented crisis arising from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a press statement Borbora said that if each of the around 10 lakh registered members of the Congress party in Assam contributes just Rs 100, the party can mobilise a generous fund up to the tune of approximately Rs 10 crore. Half the amount so collected can be given to the Chief Ministers Relief Fund in order to help the government effort in Assam, while the other half can be given to the Prime Ministers Relief Fund in aid of the national effort.

Borbora has appealed to the APCC president to constitute a fund towards which party members can digitally extend their contributions. The fight against the pandemic is long drawn and would consist not only of efforts to meet the medical crisis but also steps would have to be taken for economic reconstruction and every stage would require substantial financial resources to meet the challenges. By mobilising the fund, the Congress party can perform an important role in the effort to fight the pandemic in Assam and in India, Borbora said.
