State cancer institute celebrates first anniversary

GUWAHATI, Feb 20 - The State Cancer Institute, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), completed one year of service for cancer patients on February 17. On February 16, a day-long Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme was held, where cancer specialists from Mumbai and Assam deliberated on recent advances in cancer treatment.

On the anniversary day, a �Run for cancer awareness� was organised, which witnessed more than 700 participants from the Gauhati Medical College, Cancer Hospital, Bharat Scouts, NCC, BSF, NDRF, Composite Hospital, the Lutuma football team, students from the Arya School, Narakasur School, Fatasil School and general public.

The awareness campaign highlighted the importance of prevention and early detection of cancer. Focus was on giving up tobacco consumption in any form, as it is one of the causes of cancer.

A public meeting was held on the Cancer Hospital premises where Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was the chief guest. In his speech, the Minister expressed his satisfaction over the all-round development of the hospital achieved within a short spell of one year and mentioned about more development programmes. He was in all praise for the faculty and staff of the hospital for their exemplary service and commitment to the institution, a press release stated.

Padma Bhushan recipient Dr Praful B Desai, former Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and a cancer surgeon of international repute, attended the ceremony as the guest of honour, and delivered the anniversary oration. Dr Desai spoke on �The dazzling brilliance of science � then, now and into the future�

He deliberated on how science has contributed for human uplift in different ways keeping pace with the changing times. The Doloi of Maa Kamakhya Devalaya, Kabindra Sarma, handed over a van to the Health Minister to be used by the Cancer Hospital.

A cultural programme was held in the evening where the Cancer Hospital and Guwahati Medical College faculty, students and staff performed.
