State budget session likely to be over today

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 23 - In view of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly is likely to be concluded tomorrow after passage of the State Budget.

A meeting of the Assemblys Business Advisory Committee (BAC) was held today. Sources said the BAC reached a unanimous decision that the Assembly session should be curtailed due to the prevailing situation arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The matter is expected to be raised in the House tomorrow for its formal approval.

The House is in recess currently and will reassemble tomorrow morning.

Sources added that the days proceedings will start with the question hour and immediately after the question hour is over the Assam Appropriation Bill (No-II) 2020 or the State Budget will be introduced for consideration and passage.

The Budget is likely to be passed without any discussion.

In addition, some government bills are also expected to be taken up for passage.

Attempt will be made to get over the business as quickly as possible. Once the question hour is over and the Appropriation Bill and the government bills are cleared the House is likely to be adjourned sine die, said a source.

The budget session, which began on March 2, was originally scheduled to get over on March 30.
