GUWAHATI, Dec 30 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh, today demanded that former minister Nilamani Sen Deka should tender a written apology to Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani immediately.
The saffron party also insisted that the former minister, who triggered a controversy by making a derogatory remark against the Union minister, should apologise to the people of Assam as well.
State BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal said that Deka has pushed the entire Assamese society into an embarrassing situation with his comments that are demeaning to women. Addressing media persons at the BJP head office here, Sonowal said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi should direct his colleague to apologise for his offensive comments.
On the other hand, Sonowal also alleged that Tarun Gogoi has been manipulating the police force and has reduced it to being a �Congress agent.� �Tarun Gogoi has forgotten to act as the head of the State. Instead, he is acting as a Congressman with a vituperative attitude towards the Opposition,� said Sonowal, alleging that the police department has been dancing to the tune of the Congress.
Sonowal also condemned the alleged police harassment of BJP members and said that several BJP leaders like Vijay Gupta, Rupam Goswami and others have been manhandled by the police.
�The police are behaving as if the BJP members are criminals. It is really unfortunate that the police have been directed to target the homes of BJP members,� alleged Sonowal, informing that the police have been searching the houses of several BJP members.
It may be mentioned here that the BJP today staged hunger strikes in all the districts in protest against the offensive comments of Deka, alleged police atrocity on its members and manipulation of the Assam Police by the Congress.
Sonowal asserted that the BJP would always stand for the honour of women and protest all such developments that are disgraceful to women.
