State athletic body gearing up for nationals

GUWAHATI, June 13 - Assam Athletic Association is all set to host the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletic Championship scheduled to be held here from June 26 to 29.

The championship, sponsored by the Assam Government, will be held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai here. Altogether eight field and 14 track events, for both men and women will be conducted during the four-day meet.

Giving details about the championship in a press conference here today, the organising committee chairman Lakhya Konwar said that all the top athletes of the country, including Commonwealth Games athletes Neeraj Chopra (javelin), Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (discus), Muhammed Anas, Hima Das (both track runners), among others will be seen in action.

�All the athletes are taking the championship very seriously as Indian athletes for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia will be picked from this meet,� revealed Konwar.

He further said, Hima has been made the Brand Ambassador for the championship as for the first time Assam is hosting such a mega national level athletics event.

Two batch of Indian athletes are training at Poland and Finland and they will fly directly to Guwahati to take part in the meet.

Arjuna Award winning athlete Bhogeswar Baruah, State athletic body secretary Pradip Nunisa, Director of Sports Pabitra Ram Khound were also present in the press meet and spoke on different aspects.

Nunisa said the championship will be organised in two sessions � morning 6.45 to 9.30 am and afternoon 5 to 9.30 pm.

Around 400 athletes from 36 units will compete in the meet.
