Stage set for State Games

SILCHAR, Jan 1 - Preparations are afoot in all the 15 venues across Barak Valley for the third edition of the State Games beginning at the SM Dev Stadium here from January 7 to 12.

Altogether 25 disciplines will feature in the six-day mega sports meet and 25 districts accredited by the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) will take part in the events. The track for athletics, the main attraction of the Games is being prepared at the Police Parade Ground here with meticulous attention. Stadium secretary of the Silchar DSA Chandan Sharma is looking after the preparation of the track. The stage for the inaugural ceremony of the Games is being prepared at the SM Dev Stadium. However, according to sources at Silchar DSA, decisions on the torch relay to kick off the Games will be taken once the AOA officials reach here.

Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister and president of Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Gautam Roy has announced that he will give Rs 10 lakh on his personal behalf to Silchar DSA for conducting the mega event successfully. He visited SM Dev Stadium and Police Parade Ground to take stock of the proceedings.

On the other hand, archery, kabaddi and table tennis will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex and TT Club Udharbondh respectively. Members of the TT Club Udharbondh organised a meeting to accelerate the preparations for the upcoming events. A reception committee has been formed under the chairmanship of TT Club president Surjya Kumar Sinha to look after the proceedings.
