Stage set for repatriation of 10 Bangladeshi nationals

By Arindam Gupta

SILCHAR, Oct 12 - In what could be called the first major diplomatic move to the Indo-Bangla repatriation process, the 10 Bangladeshi nationals, including two minors, detained at the Silchar Central Jail here will be deported back to Bangladesh through the international border at Karimganj on Thursday.

The Bangladeshi nationals will be handed over to the team of Karimganj police and 133 Bn of BSF and at 10 am, they would be handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials, police sources said.

On the other hand, according to jail sources here, among the detainees who will be deported include Burhan Uddin, Shamim Ahmed, Sablu Ahmed, Enam Uddin, Anowar Hussain, Ali Hussain, Basudev Roy, Archana Biswas and her two minor children Gopal Biswas and Gobindo Biswas. All the detainees are happy to know that they will be going back to their homeland, sources said.

Terming this as a diplomatic success, Cachar Deputy Commissioner S Vishwanathan said this decision was expected to reach us any moment since there were frequent talks between the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs and the Bangladesh Government.

Also, the process gained momentum after the DC/DM-level meetings between the bordering districts of India and Bangladesh at Moulabi Bazar in 2015 as well, he said, adding, the credentials of the 10 detainees were verified and they would be sent back as per process.

It may be mentioned that after proper verification of the documents, the Bangladesh Government in August this year had agreed to take back the Bangladeshi nationals who were caught from various places in Cachar and Karimganj districts and sent to the detention camp at Silchar.
