Stage set for national archery

GUWAHATI, April 21 � The officials of the Archery Association of Assam (AAA) has completed almost all arrangements for holding the 30th Senior National Archery at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Sarusajai here from April 24 to 26.

Addressing mediapersons today, the AAA president Jayanta Boro said they have already got Rs 13 lakh and are confident that the meet will be organised in a befitting manner. Terming it as a high profile event of the country, Boro revealed all the top-ranking archers will vie for titles in recurve and compound events.

Organising secretary Pradip Hazarika informed they have already received entries from 14 affiliated units and hoped around 500 players will attend the championship.

The SAI NE Sub Centre�s Director in-charge Subhash Basumatary said 42 to 45 targets will be set inside the main stadium. He intimated that as this championship will be counted as one of the major events before the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, all the leading archers are taking it seriously. The probables for the Commonwealth Games will be picked up from this championship. He also informed that this time Assam will certainly perform well and hoped for some medals.

Ace archer Jayanta Talukdar will represent Jharkhand instead of Tata Academy, informed Basumatary. He further revealed that over 20 archers from Assam will be seen in action representing different teams.

SLAC member secretary Rekibuddin Ahmed also promised to provide all possible support in organising the mega event.

The probables for the Commonwealth Games who are attending a camp in Kolkata will arrive here tomorrow.

The AAA president also announced the Assam team. The archers will continue their practice at Sarusajai prior to the national championship.

The team members are: (Men, recurve) Nayan Moni Nath, Soneswar Boro, Semanta Deka, Rajib Basumatary. (Women, recurve) Belsri Narzary, Prativa Boro, Dipali Boro, Anjima Basumatary. (Compound) Gokul Tamuly, L Haridas Singh, M Chinglen Singh, Th Chender Kumar.

The SAI team: (Men) Hemanta Basumatary, Sanjay Boro, Surojit Nawhalia Phukan, Jarang Basumatary. (Women) Surmila Devi, Susanti Basumatary, Hemani Boro, Protima Boro.
