GUWAHATI, May 18 - Ending the almost month-and-half long suspense, the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are set to be opened tomorrow to decide the fate of over a thousand candidates who are in the fray for the Legislative Assembly Elections 2016. Counting of votes across 51 counting centres of Assam will begin at 8 am tomorrow. Initial trends are expected to emerge by 8.30 am and results from all the 126 Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) are likely to be out by noon.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued all necessary instructions to the District Election Officers and Superintendents of Police for ensuring a smooth counting process.

A total of 1,064 candidates are in the fray for the 126 Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in the State. A total of 51 counting centres have been set up in the State, consisting of 143 counting halls and 1,771 counting tables. A total of 126 ECI observers will observe the counting process.
Counting staff, comprising 5,313 officials, will be deployed in the counting centres. At each of the 1,771 counting tables, one micro-observer shall be deployed.
The entire counting process will be videographed. A technical person from Bharat Electronics Ltd will be available for assistance for each LAC.
Voting for the Assembly polls in the State had taken place in two phases � on April 4 and April 11.
Among the prominent candidates whose fate will be decided tomorrow are Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi from Titabor LAC, BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli, Paban Singh Ghatowar of Congress from Moran, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of BJP from Titabor, minister Ajanta Neog from Golaghat, Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi from Sivasagar, minister Gautam Roy from Katlichera, former Chief Minister and AGP leader PK Mahanta from Barhampur, former minister and BJP strongman Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari, six-time MLA and AGP leader Phani Bhusan Choudhury from Bongaigaon, Congress leader and senior minister Rakibul Hussain from Samuguri, Atul Bora of BJP from Dispur, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal from South Salmara, senior BPF leader Pramila Rani Brahma from Kokrajhar East, former minister and BPF leader Chandan Brahma from Sidli and senior minister Chandan Sarkar from Abhayapuri South.
