Stage set for BTC polls tomorrow

By CORRESPONDENT

KOKRAJHAR, April 7 With the end of campaign today, the stage is set for holding BTC election scheduled for April 9.

While the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF has fielded its candidates in all the 40 constituencies of BTC, the Rabiram Narzary-led BPPF has fielded 26 candidates and has extended its support to its like-minded parties like AGP, CPM, AIUDF, UDPF and Independent candidates in the remaining constituencies.

Meanwhile, BPPF advisor and ex-MP UG Brahma expressed apprehension of rigging, booth capturing, vandalism, etc., during the polls, as he alleged, the security in the four districts of BTAD is not adequate. It may be mentioned that Brahma had, in a complain to the State Election Commission yesterday, alleged that BPPF workers are being tortured and demanded armed security guards at all polling stations to prevent malpractices during the poll process.

On the other hand, BPF supremo Hagrama Mohilary is very optimistic of victory in all the constituencies of BTC, as there has been massive development activities in the BTAD area. This claim of development was, however countered by State Congress president Bhubaneswar Kalita who said that this was so due to the initiative of the Congress party.

Udalguri Correspondent adds: The Udalguri district administration is now ready for holding the second BTC elections in the entire 10 constituencies. According to the district administration sources, the entire district is divided into 20 zones along with 122 sectors for the 10 constituencies with as many as 19 companies of security forces which include the CRPF jawans and Assam Police personnel, including the women police force.

Talking to this Correspondent over telephone, AP Tewari, Superintendent of Police of Udalguri district, said that the district police is committed to ensure free-and-fair elections on April 9 in all the 10 constituencies.

He also said that security scenario in the district has been beefed up and those believed to be disturbing factors have been restricted for the purpose. The State Election Commission has already deputed two observers to monitor the electioneering process in the district. The SP also appealed to the general public to extend cooperations to security forces to check any unpleasant situations during the election hours.

Meanwhile, all the 795 polling parties along with security personnel got ready with polling materials to leave for the polling stations.

Bpf workers residence targetted: Meanwhile, some anti-social elements tried to create panic at Dangdupur village under Udalguri PS last night at about 11.50 pm by firing about 9 rounds of bullets in the air near the residence of Rameswar Boro, a senior BPF leader of Udalguri.

Later talking to this Correspondent, Boro expressed grave concern over the bid to attack him by unidentified gunmen who earlier tried to torch his house two days ago.
