Stage set for Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI, Sept 1 � The 28th Abhiruchi Sports Day celebrated to mark the birthday of Assam�s first Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua will be observed with the usual fervour on September 3. This year the star attraction of the day will be Arjuna awardee and star athlete Ashwini Nachappa who will lead the mass jogging programme, said chairman of the organising committee Bolendra Mohan Chakravorty in a press meet here today.

The day will kickstart with the mass jogging event from Chandmari flyover at 6.15. Nachappa will lead the event and there will be other sporting greats like Monalisa Baruah Mehta in the event.

The event will be flagged of by Health and education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The jogging event will culminate at the Nehru Stadium where noted sportspersons and personalitiess related to sports will be felicitated. At the Nehru Stadium there will also be a inter-school dance and physical training competition.

The organisers also Oil India Limited, NRL, ONGC, Coca Cola for their financial assistance.

The players which will be felicitated on the day are: (Archery) Arjun Jayanta Talukdar, Sanjoy Boro, Mainao Narzary, Hemanta Basumatary, Parashan Nath, Dipali Boro, Himanai Boro, Protima Boro Sr, Protima Boro; (Athletics) Pranjal Gogoi; (Boxing) Shiva Thapa, Minu Basumatary, Thalou Basumatary, Pinky Kachari, Chanashree Brahma, Anjali Mushahary, Aalari Boro, Rumi Gogoi; (Caenoing) Achyut Mushahary, Sushila Devi; (Fencing) Kabita Devi, N Chaobi Devi; (Karate) Sameer Das, Nitul Deka, Mazharul Islam; (Weightlifting) Renu Bala Chanu, Papul Changmai, Zameer Hussain, Apurba Chetia; (Football) Alen Deuri, Holicharan Narzary, Nabin Rabha; (Basketball) Sunil Singha; (Lawn Ball) Md Raja, Taniya Choudhury, Nayanmoni Saikia, Mridul Borgohain, Manu Kumari Paul; (Taekwondo) Tasen Begum, Monalisa Talukdar, Anju Boro, Rekharani Gogoi, Kanima Ramchairy, Ritu Lalung, Nandan Brahma, Nilufa Begum.

The awards to be given to given on the day include: (Sashi Sharma Memorial Organiser Award) Raj Kakoti (Taekwondo), (Dilip Choudhury Promosing Cricketer Award) Hrishikesh Tamuly, (Sibananda Das Memorial Coach Award) Raju Singh (archery), (Gopal Chandra Baruah Memorial Promising Sportsperson Award) Nebedita Barman (athletics).

Former players of the State who be felicitated: Tapan Hazarika, Ramen Das, Tarani Barman, Naren Bez (All Guwahati), Abdul Jabbar (Nalbari), Mahesh Choudhury (Bongaigaon), Rajiv Bhatta.
