ST status: Centre clears Bodo, Karbi demands

NEW DELHI, May 25 - The Union Cabinet today cleared ST status to two tribal communities in Assam.

According to official sources, the Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today cleared introduction of two Bills in Parliament for certain amendments in the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, so as to modify the list of Scheduled Tribes in the States of Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and identification of new communities in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The communities, according to approved modalities, were found to be eligible for their inclusion in, exclusion from and other modifications in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

In Assam, Boro, Boro Kachari and Karbi (Mikir) were granted ST status. The Bodos have for long been fighting for ST status to Bodos living in the hill districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong.
