By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 7 - Suspended Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Dr N Rajamarthandan was arrested late last night by the Crime Branch of Assam Police for allegedly revealing crucial information related to an ongoing investigation into the Silapathar case, which relates to attack on the office of the All Assam Students Union.

Dr Rajamarthandan was the supervisory officer of the investigation team probing the case.

The information was provided to an RTI applicant Ambika Roy, who also happens to be a senior functionary of Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samity (NIBBUS).

After being questioned for nearly eight hour sessions, the Assam Police arrested Dr Rajamarthandan and was produced before the Court of Sub Divisional Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) later in the evening, which remanded him to two days police custody.

The bail petition moved by the counsels of Dr Rajamarthandan was accordingly rejected.

Meanwhile, police sources claimed that Dr Rajamarthandans custodial interrogation was necessitated after the accused abstained from giving answers to specific answers to queries.

There are many questions still unanswered. It is still not known how the accused police officer came in contact with the NIBBUS general secretary Ambika Roy who had filed the RTI petition, sources added.
