Sr national fencing gets off

GUWAHATI, Feb 2 - The 29th edition of the Senior National Fencing Championship got underway at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here today. Around 800 fencers from 33 states are participating in the four-day championship where all the leading players of the event in the country are taking part.

Fencing Association of India (FAI) Rajeev Mehta, who is also the secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association, was the chief guest in the opening ceremony. FAI secretary general Basir Ahmed Khan, treasurer Ashok Dudhare were also present in the inaugural function which was presided over by Assam Fencing Association president Durga Das Boro. SAI Regional Centre Director Dr Subhash Basumatary, Deputy Director, Sports and Youth Welfare Mustaba Piyar among others were also present on the occasion.

However, the competition was started in the morning and the first round matches were going on in full swing.

The newly set up fencing complex in the RG Baruah Sports Complex was formally inaugurated before the opening ceremony.
