Spurt in legal aid to NRC left-outs

SILCHAR, Sept 2 - Expressing serious disappointment over the exclusion of 19,06,657 people from the final list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) published on Saturday, the Silchar District Congress committee has decided to extend legal aid to the people left out of the list.

In a release issued to the media, Partha Ranjan Chakraborty, general secretary and chief of publicity of the District Congress Committee informed that a meeting of the legal aid committee was held under the chairmanship of advocate Deepak Kumar Deb in the presence of All India Mahila Congress committee president and former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev. In the meeting, it was decided that the party would provide legal guidance to the NRC left-out genuine Indian citizens and clear instructions have been given to cadres of the party to jot down names of these citizens even at the block level as well.

�The BJP has failed to keep it�s promise of securing lives of genuine Indian citizens, it had made to the people,� Chakraborty mentioned in the release.

On the other hand, advocates under local body Hindu Samhati have also decided to extend legal aid to the people who have been excluded from the NRC list. Advocate Samrat Dutta, in a release issued to the media, informed that they would provide legal assistance to the genuine Indian citizens to file their claims in the Foreigners Tribunals.
