By Correspondent

SUALKUCHI, Nov 23 - The State Water Resource Department, Hajo is taking steps to reconstruct the stone spur along the bank of the Brahmaputra along Bamundi and its outskirts under Hajo circle in Kamrup district which eroded within a year of its construction.

It may be mentioned that the construction of the spur along the foothills of Bamundi mound near the playground of Bamundi HS to Mahkaltola and the outskirts of greater Bamundi began in 2013 and was completed in 2014 by the Water Resource Department, Government of Assam. The stones laid on the bank were not cemented and as time passed, they got dislocated. The dislocated stones have weakened the spur, causing concern among the people living near the bank of the Brahmaputra.

The residents told this correspondent that the river was flowing near Laheswari Chor which is nearly a kilometre away from the north bank, last year. But this year, the river flowing near the north bank has eroded the soil at the bottom of the spur in the process weakening it. The local people have expressed serious concern over the negligence shown by the officials of the State Water Resource department in providing technical advice to the people at the time of construction.

They said that Rs 14,80,20,000 was allotted for the spurs construction and alleged that the money was not fully utilised. They demanded of the Government to reconstruct the damaged part of the spur immediately.

Meanwhile, members of the Paschim Bongsar Anchalik Students Union met the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup, and also demanded steps for reconstruction of the spur.
