GUWAHATI, Nov 6 - Almost a quarter of married women in the State have experienced some form of spousal violence, while around half the women of Assam in the age group of 15-49 years own a house or land and have a bank account.
As per findings of the recent National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16), 24.5 per cent married women in the State have experienced spousal violence. In the urban areas of Assam, the corresponding rate was 15.9 per cent, while it was 26.2 per cent in the rural areas.
However, the total numbers have shown a downward trend since the third round of NFHS in 2005-06 when 39.4 per cent of women ever married in the State had reported similar experiences of spousal violence.
NFHS-4 also found that 52.3 per cent of women in Assam in the age group of 15-49 years owned a house or land, either alone or jointly with others, including 45.9 per cent women in urban areas and 53.7 per cent in rural areas.
Similarly, 46 per cent women in that age group have a mobile phone that they themselves use. Over 71 per cent women in urban areas of the State and 40.7 per cent in rural areas have their own mobile phones, the survey found.
The previous survey of 2005-06 had not covered these two parameters.
The percentage of women in Assam having their own bank account has also gone up during the period between the two surveys.
As per NFHS-4, 45.4 per cent of women have a bank or savings account that they themselves use. The figure in urban areas was 61.5 per cent and in rural Assam it was 42.1 per cent.
The corresponding figure during the third round of NFHS in 2005-06 was only 11.7 per cent across the State.
As many as 87.4 per cent of currently married women and in the age group of 15-49 years in 2015-16 reported that they usually participate in households decisions compared to 88.1 per cent in 2005-06.
NFHS-4 also found that 17 per cent women who had worked during the last 12 months prior to the survey were paid in cash, as against 25.8 per cent in 2005-06.
However, knowledge about HIV-AIDS still remains very low among young women in Assam, the survey found.
Only 9.4 per cent women in the age group of 15-49 years had comprehensive knowledge about HIV-AIDS. It was only a marginal increase from the figure of 8.2 per cent reported in NFHS-3 in 2005-06.
The National Family Health Survey 2015-16 was the fourth in the NFHS series and it provides information on population, health and nutrition. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had designated the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, as the nodal agency to conduct NFHS-4.
