Sportspersons honoured

GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - The State Level Advisory Committee (SLAC) for Students and Youth Welfare, Assam felicitated the State sportspersons who represented the State and the country in different national and international championships.

The felicitation and award distribution function was held at the Shradhanjali Kanan here today where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was present as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister lauded the State sportspersons for their effort in bringing laurels to the State.

State Sports Minister Ajit Singh said, �The SLCA is doing a commendable job by encouraging the sportspersons with cash awards.� Debabrata Saikia, MLA and member secretary of the SLAC while welcoming the award recipients said that they are putting effort to provide financial assistance to the sportspersons and the organisations so that the standard of sports could be improved in Assam. Ace boxer Shiva Thapa and taekwondo player Rekharani Gogoi were declared the most popular sportspersons of the State.

Altogether 15 organisation�s walked away with cash rewards of Rs 50,000 each while 35 sportspersons were given cash award along with five coaches.

The international medal winning sportspersons were: Himani Boro, Sanjoy Boro, Jayanta Talukdar (Archery), Laimwn Narzary (Athletics), Shiva Thapa, Lovlina Borgohain, Jamuna Boro, Pwilao Basumatary (Boxing), Pragyan Jyoti Gogoi (Badminton), Sahil Dey (Chess), Anu Chetia (Cycling), Manalisha Sonowal, Swapnapriya Baruah (Weightlifting), Bastab Tapan Bordoloi (Swimming), K Rajen Singha and L Thoinu Chanu (Sepak Takraw).
