Sportspersons feted on Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI, Sept 3 � Altogether 42 sportspersons, including organisers, coach and head of institutions were felicitated today on the occasion of 31st Abhiruchi Sports Day which has been organised on the occasion of birth day of Arjuna Award winning athlete Bhogeswar Barua.

The Sports Day was organised in various places in the State with day-long programmes. In the central function here the Day started with mass jogging which started at the Chandmari and culminated at the RG Baruah Sports Complex. A good number of students took part in the jogging where Bhogeswar Barua himself was present.

Former Indian women cricket team captain Anjum Chopra was present in the felicitation function as the chief guest. Anjum, while addressing the gathering said, such events will definitely boost the youngsters in taking sports seriously. She also praised the organisers for honouring sportspersons of the State who represented the national teams.

The former cricketer also thanked the BCCI to bring the women�s cricket under its fold and congratulated the Assam women cricket team for its remarkable show in the national level meets.

Noted journalist S Sabanayakan of The Hindu, former union minister Birendra Prasad Baishya, Commissioner Cultural Affairs Swapnanil Baruah, SSP AP Tiwari, NHPC Executive Director Ronel Kumar were present on the occasion along with a host of sportspersons in various programmes.

The president of the organising body Balander Mohan Chakravorty welcomed the gathering and shared his experience of the last 30 years.

Sonari Correspondent adds: Abhiruchi Sports Day was observed today at Naphuk and Safrai in Charaideo sub-division. Safrai Regional Sports Association and Naphuk Sannmilet Yuva Manch organised various competitions to mark the day.

Dergaon Correspondent adds: The 31st edition of Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated at Dergaon under the aegis of Dergaon Sports Association today. The sports quiz was conducted by Sanjoy Kr Hazarika. In the quiz event, Bornali Phukan, Hoimonti Devi and Warin Akhtar of Dergaon Jatiya Vidyalaya was declared as the best team.

In table tenis, Chinmoy Jyoti Dutta was adjudged as the best player while Ashish Bordoloi bagged the second position and Sujol Gowel and Rishav Thakur bagged the third position.
