Assam Cricket Association mourns demise of former cricketer Subir Dutta Roy

Silchar, May 30: The Assam Cricket Association(ACA) has expressed deep sorrow at the demise of Subhabrata Dutta Roy, popularly known as Subir, who passed away on Friday at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital due to COVID-19. He was 65. A resident of the R.K. Mission Road, Silchar, he leaves behind his wife and two sons. He is the brother of Sujoy Dutta Roy, vice president of District Sports Association Silchar.

In a condolence message, Romen Dutta, president ACA and secretary of the cricket association Devajit Saikia expressed solidarity with the bereaved family members of the deceased and at the same time prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. A former State Cricketer, Late Subir Dutta Roy began his career in 1972 with Club Cricket, and went on to play several Inter-District Cricket Tournaments, including Nur Uddin Senior Inter-District Tournament from Silchar, besides representing Assam in the Cooch Behar Trophy and C.K. Nayudu School Tournament.

The wicket-keeper- batsman, who later rose to prominence as a social activist, was also a member of the 1987 Assam Ranji Team in the match against Tripura, albeit as the 12th Man. Assam had won that match by an innings and 53 runs.

Subir Dutta Roy was also a Member, Junior Selection Committee, Assam Cricket Association, besides being a Life Member of District Sports Association, Silchar. He had also served as a Coach to the Senior District Team, District Sports Association, Silchar.
