Sports law workshop on July 21

GUWAHATI, July 18 - A day-long national level workshop on sports law � National Workshop on Sports Law and Management � will be held at the Phanidhar Dutta Seminar Hall in the Gauhati University campus on July 21 from 9.30 am onwards.

The workshop has been organised by the University Law College, Gauhati University in association with Studio Nilima, a collaborative network for research and capacity building. The workshop is sponsored by the Bar Council of India.

Professor Hayden Opie AM of University of Melbourne, an expert on the subject giving details about the workshop in a press conference here said, it is important to know the sports laws not only by the sportspersons but also by the administrators, sponsors, among others. �It is important for all the sports related people to know the sports laws thoroughly so that they do not face any legal problem while executing their respective responsibilities. So we are organising the workshop where we will elaborate on different aspects of sports laws,� said Hayden.

Noted lawyer Nilay Dutta, who is also president of the Studio Nilima, said, �Sportspersons sometime put themselves in awkward situations due to ignorance of sports laws and sometimes even spoil their illustrated sporting career. So all the sportspersons and administrators must know sports laws which will support them in gaining advantage from the conspiracies which are framed against them by some people with vested interest. This workshop will definitely help the sporting fraternity in gaining vast knowledge on the subject,� Dutta said.

Principal of the University Law College JP Bora said that they are planning to introduce the subject at the earliest.

Senior advocate Apurba Kumar Sarma, BP Kotoky also addressed the media.

Assam Cricket Association secretary Pradip Buragohain said that this workshop will basically help the past and present players and members of the organisation. He also elaborated about their plan in setting up a sub centre of the National Cricket Academy at Dibrugarh with the help of BCCI.

Speakers like Prof Hayden, Justice L Nageswara Rao, Justice (Retd) AP Mishra, Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, SAI director Dr Subhash Basumatary among others will speak on various subjects in the workshop.
