Sports dept honours Everest climbers

GUWAHATI, June 13 - The Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare felicitated the mountaineers who climbed the Mt Everest.

In a well attended function at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today, felicitation was accorded to Henry David Teron, Nanda Dulal Das, Kharsing Terang, Naba Kumar Phukan who scaled the highest peak in the world. Teron, Das and Terang were the members of the Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA) while Phukan completed his venture on his own effort. Other members of the AMA team-Manas Baruah, Dr Jagdish Basumatary and Upen Chakraborty were also honoured on the occasion.

State Sports Minister Naba Kumar Doley, attending the function as chief guest lauded the achievement and hoped that the youngsters will be inspired by such activities. He also revealed that the new State Government will launch few schemes soon for the development of sports in the State.

Arjuna Award winning athlete Bhogeswar Baruah, Deputy Speaker Dilip Kumar Paul, MLAs Sanjay Kishan, Shiladitya Dev, Sports Commissioner Ajay Tiwari, Commissioner Industries Swapnanil Baruah, Director of Sports Anjan Sarma, AMA president Satyen Sarma, journalist Premadhar Sharma were also present in the felicitation function which was anchored by Deputy Director Pradip Hazarika.

Henry David and Naba Phukan explained about their experiences during the expedition.

Organisations like State BJP Sports Cell, Panbazar Boys Club, Assam Amateur Boxing Association among others felicitated the Everest climbers and the Sports Minister.
