Sports Day observed on RG�s birth anniversary

GUWAHATI, Oct 18 � The Directorate of Sports, Board of Sports and State Sports Council jointly observed the State Sports Day with various activities yesterday.

The Day was observed to mark the birth anniversary of R G Baruah, the architect of modern Assam. The State Government had declared October 17 as State Sports Day in early 1990s when Hiteswar Saikia was the Chief Minister.

Assam Governor JB Patnaik paid glowing tributes by laying floral wreaths on the bust of RG at the RG Baruah Sports Complex. The Directorate of Sports organised a badminton competition to mark the occasion at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium among players of different age groups. In the junior boys� category, Rishav Sarma won the title by defeating Deepjyoti Dutta, while Bornali Konwar beat Megha M Bora for the junior girls� crown. Dipjyoti Bora downed Angshuman Bora for the senior boys� title.

Former international Madhurjya Baruah, social worker Radha Bora, Assam Badminton Association secretary Omar Rashid were present in the prize-distribution function.
