Sports administrator found murdered

SILCHAR, Oct 6 - Samarendra Bhattacharjee, a noted educationist and sports administrator of Barak Valley, was found brutally murdered in his Shillongpatty residence around 12.05 am today.

According to police, the accused � identified as Sanjay Acharjee, the caretaker of Bhattacharjee � was arrested from the Silchar Railway Station at Tarapur hours after the incident.

Residents said that they rushed to the residence after hearing a loud cry and saw Bhattacharjee lying on the floor in a pool of blood. �It was around 12.15 am when we reached his residence. We called 108 emergency service and police. Later, we learnt that the culprit, who was his caretaker for the past two years, has been arrested. Bhattacharjee succumbed around 2.15 am while he was being taken to the ICU,� a neighbour said.

Bhattacharjee was suffering from cancer for a long time.

A passionate sportsperson and educationist, Bhattacharjee was the former principal of Narshing HS School and the president of India Club Silchar. He was also a former vice president of Silchar DSA.

Bhattacharjee also wrote many books on sports. His demise was condoled by a large section of people across Cachar. Traders of Shillongpatty kept their shutters down as a mark of respect. India Club also kept its flag at half mast.
