GUWAHATI, April 23 - SPO jawans recruited in 2008 today staged a demonstration on the new Saraighat bridge over their grievances, blocking traffic on the route for several hours.

They also engaged in a scuffle with police personnel. Around one hundred SPOs participated in the stir, which was withdrawn around 4.30 pm.

Later, the SPOs submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, reiterating their demand to provide permanent jobs to the personnel. The agitating SPOs also sought a meeting with the Chief Minister before May 5. In their memorandum, they stated that in 2014, the government had assured them that they would be absorbed in the Assam Industrial Security Force.

There was a move to fill up 145 vacant posts in the 1st and 2nd AISF from the SPOs. But, there are around 761 SPOs who were recruited in 2008. The society demands the government initiate measures to provide permanent jobs to the SPOs by May, the memorandum stated.
