Spl Category State status issue may figure

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, June 8 The shelving of the Special Category State status and discontinuance of the special funding regime may figure in the conference of the Congress Chief Ministers scheduled for tomorrow.

Chief Ministers of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram are scheduled to take part in the daylong conference, which would be chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is also expected to join the meeting.

According to sources, the conference is scheduled to discuss fiscal management under the Modi regime, deliberation on the NDA governments key policies, evaluation of governance outcome at the state level and discussion on the birth anniversaries of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Babasaheb Ambedkar.

For the Chief Ministers of the North-east, the meeting would give them an opportunity to vent their ire over the Modi governments policy of squeezing them financially. The discarding of the Special Category State status and 90:10 pattern of funding has hit the north-eastern states the most.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had recently told newsmen that the Special Category State status was discontinued by the 14th Finance Commission and not the NDA government.
