Speeding truck mows down Silchar scribe

SILCHAR, July 29 - In a terrible road mishap, Malin Sharma, reporter of a local electronic media channel was killed on Sunday night at around 11 pm.

He was 43 and is survived by his wife and a daughter.

According to sources, Malin was on his way home after covering an event at Rotary Club here when he was hit by a speeding truck near Tarapur police outpost. With severe injuries on the head, Malin was found dead on the spot, sources added.

The accidental death of Malin, known for his polite and generous behaviour among his colleagues and commoners has been mourned by one and all across Barak Valley. He was working with the local channel for nearly 20 years.

Following his post-mortem formalities on Monday, journalists and people from the media fraternity took out a procession with his mortal remains from Silchar Medical College and Hospital and reached Gandhi Bagh wherein people from all walks of life offered their final tributes. Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri also reached the place and offered her tributes to Malin.

She was questioned on the alleged sloppy approach of the administration in responding to the requests for prompt action by scribes from different houses who had staged a protest demanding action against uncontrolled and rash driving by trucks and trippers which ply through the roads within the town after 9 pm when �No Entry� restrictions for heavy vehicles are relaxed.

On the other hand, annoyed with the state of affairs, people of Silchar belonging to various associations have called for a 12-hour Silchar bandh on Tuesday as a mark of protest on the issue.
