SILCHAR, Oct 31: In a terrible incident, two persons were killed and several others including minors were severely injured by a speeding truck at the Meherpur area in Silchar on Wednesday.
Sources informed that the incident occurred around 8.30 pm near the Birbalbazar area of Meherpur when the speeding truck bearing number NL01K9741 hit the victims who were a part of a procession to immerse idol of Goddess Kali.
Fumed at the incident, the locals set the truck ablaze.
According to police, the deceased have been identified as Sonali Das (18) and Pompa Dey (20), residents of Durgapally area in the vicinity. At least 21 others have been admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment while the road which leads to the medical college and hospital was brought under thick security cover to avert any further clash. Additional SP Jagadish Das, DSP (HQ) AJ Baruah and other officials rushed to the spot to pacify the mob.
Drivers Rajkumar Das (20) and Prasanta Ramsiary (27) have been arrested and will be produced before the court, police informed.
Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy reached the hospital and treated upon some of the injured therein and asked to provide free treatment to them as well.
Condemning the incident, Dr Roy slammed the traffic officials for lapse in duty and informed that appropriate action would be taken against the officials on duty. "The injured persons brought to the hospital would be given free medical treatment while families of those died would get ex- gratia amount at the earliest," Dr Roy said.
On the other hand, Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar also reached the hospital and inquired about the injured patients. Annoyed with the state of affairs, the Deputy Speaker lashed hard at the traffic personnel and informed that he would speak to the Cachar SP regarding ensuring better efficiency from the traffic personnel in rendering duties.
The accused truck driver had a scuffle at Sonai Road following which it zoomed past through Rangirkhari and National Highway traffic points at great speed affecting many on the way till it killed two persons at Meherpur.
Meanwhile, the incident has triggered massive reactions among people and even netizens as well.
