Speed breaker kills teacher at Gingia

By Correspondent

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Oct 3 - In yet another case of a freak accident on the killer National Highway 15, a teacher succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night at Kuhiarbari under Gingia Police Station in Biswanath Police District.

It may be mentioned here that it was the third such incident in which at least three persons have lost their lives in the last couple of months in Biswanath and Gohpur subdivisions, due to the erroneous speed breakers on the said highway, raised by the administration to prevent accidents. One has to pass at least hundreds of speed breakers from Jamugurihat to Gohpur. Instead of widening the highway and filling up the side-berms, the concerned departments adopt an easy way of raising speed breakers to satisfy the local agitated people when an accident takes place, though raising of any kind of an obstacle on a National Highway was banned by the Supreme Court much earlier.

According to information, Phanidhar Upadhyaya (47), an assistant teacher in Pub Behali HS School, Bedeti, was seriously injured at Kuhiarbari around 7-30 pm that night while the motor cycle he was travelling hit a speed breaker. He was rushed to Kettela Catholic Hospital, Borgang and later shifted to Guwahati, but Upadhyaya who had sustained serious head injury, died on the way. He leaves behind his mother, wife, a daughter and a son.

The teacher's death was widely mourned. The students of the school and local people have blamed the administration for raising such erroneous speed breakers here and there on the highway which had led to the death of many people so far.
