Speech contest, talk to popularise astronomy Guwahati Planetarium�s silver jubilee

GUWAHATI, Nov 12 - As part of the silver jubilee celebrations of Guwahati Planetarium and to popularise astronomy among students, an extempore speech competition on astronomy and a popular talk on �concept of time� were organised by Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers� Association recently.

The programme was part of a series of events lined up for the silver jubilee year celebrations as well as to engage the students and other members of the society in the field of astronomy. The planetarium that was set up in August 1994 completes 25 years of its existence this year.

The event was attended by ASTEC Director Arup Kumar Misra, Guwahati Planetarium director Kimnei Changsan and eminent educationist Prof Anil Kumar Goswami as chief guests. Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers� Association joint secretary Sanjib Sarma delivered the welcome speech.

As many as 50 students from different schools of Guwahati participated in the extempore speech competition. The judges were Dr Bimanjyoti Medhi, associate professor in the Department of Physics, Gauhati University, and Dr Nitu Borgohain, assistant professor of physics at USTM.

The popular talk on �concept of time� was delivered by Prof Kishor Kumar Baruah of Department of Physics, Tezpur University. The events were supported by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Assam.
