Specific deadline for completion of water supply projects demanded

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 13 - The Mahanagar Unnayan Samiti, Guwahati today demanded of the State government to reconstitute the Guwahati Jal Board by including experienced and efficient officials and peoples representatives.

The Samiti made the demand while staging a sit-in demonstration in front of the Guwahati Jal Board office here.

The Samiti also demanded announcement of a specific deadline for completion of all the water supply projects of Guwahati and withdrawal of the notice issued by the Jal Board on the tariff of water.

In a memorandum the Samiti urged the State government to constitute the Water Regulatory Authority in Guwahati under the Guwahati Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Act and to fix the tariff of water after taking views of the city dwellers.

It also suggested to the State government to follow the example of the Delhi Jal Board and provide 20,000 litres of water free of cost to every family per month.

Further, the Samiti demanded continuation of all the water supply projects of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) until completion of the projects of the Jal Board. It demanded punishment to all those involved in the corruption that took place in respect of the citys water supply projects.

Crisis of potable water has become a serious issue for all residents of the city, as the water supply projects of the GMC and PHED cover only 25 per cent of the population. To tide over the crisis, the State government started four large water supply projects in 2009, 2011, 2016 and 2017. But none of the projects has reached the completion stage till date.
