By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Sept 26 - Amid the spate of incidents of mob lynching across North East fuelled by rumours on social media, including the death of two youths in Karbi Anglong district of the State, Cachar Police is taking several preventive steps including formation of a special task force to put a check on such incidents.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Rakesh Roushan on Tuesday said, We are aware of what happened in Karbi Anglong. As a part of preventive measure, we have formed a special task force following the order of the Supreme Court, which will be led by Additional SP (Headquarters) and officer-in-charge of all the police stations across the districts from which help could be sought.

Roushan, who is also the chairman of the special task force, added to inform that the incidents which have occurred in the State resulted from rumours spread via social media. Some minor incidents of group clashes have surfaced in the district and a number of persons were booked as well. The reason behind such incidents of mob lynching is lack of awareness, especially in the tea belts. Our cyber cell is working round-the-clock and we are keeping a close vigil on the vulnerable spots and request people to cooperate in preventing such incidents here. Police will reach out to the people in tea gardens and spread awareness on the issue, the Superintendent of Police maintained.

The SP also said that elaborate security steps have been taken to ensure a safe Durga Puja for the people of Cachar. Special surveillance will be on the troublesome pockets and patrolling shall be intensified. Fifteen new probationary officers shall join the district police soon to reinforce the strength before the Durga Puja celebrations, he informed.
