GUWAHATI, June 21 One of the most auspicious events of the Kamakhya temple is likely to draw close scrutiny of the city police. The police are aware that criminal elements may take advantage of the huge congregation during Ambubachi Mela to dupe unsuspecting devotees, many of whom arrive from distant places.
It is not something new, and we would keep an eye on anyone trying to create mischief in and around Kamakhya, said a police personnel based at Jalukbari. There would be adequate police presence on the temple precincts, and volunteers would also be assisting the police in controlling the crowds and related activities.
A senior official tasked with policing in and around Kamakhya told The Assam Tribune that four companies of armed personnel would be maintaining security along with around 200 constables and officers of the State Police. Apart from the main temple compound, security cover would extend to the surrounding hills, the senior official revealed.
Close circuit television cameras (CCTV) would be monitoring the flow of people for the next couple of days, and anyone can approach police personnel or volunteers in case they notice anything suspicious. Police personnel in plain clothes would also be keeping watch during the days of the Ambubachi Mela, which will get under way tomorrow.
