Special drive to curb crime in Cachar

SILCHAR, Sept 13 - Reasserting his commitment to curb crime in Cachar district, Superintendent of Police Rajveer Singh has formed a group which he has named �SP Action Group�.

Speaking about the recent activities of the special group, Singh said the main purpose of the group is to keep a vigil on the illegal activities which have created nuisance in and around the district. In his words, the special group has been able to arrest black marketers involved in LPG cylinders and diesel foul play. The police is also going hard on the illegal wine hutments spread across the town, he said.

�We have been able to arrest the Maoist leaders who had designed their plan of action in the district which is a major achievement of late,� Singh said, adding, �the SP Action Group has some of the proactive officers and jawans who are alert and are keeping a close vigil on the criminal activities in the district.�

On the other hand, in a drive against illicit liquor at Sildubi and Digarkhal on the outskirts of the district headquarters town, the SP Action Group conducted raids in the hotels of those areas and destroyed a large quantity of illicit liquor. Two persons were also arrested following the raid.

The police has also seized a cash of Rs 80,000 along with 309 teer books and arrested one person named Danish alias Bapi Chanda from Pailapul under Lakhipur police station. Moreover, as many as 50 bags of Burmese betel-nut have been seized from the ISBT Silchar on Friday night. According to police, the Burmese betel nuts were smuggled via Mizoram.
