Special allocation for neglected NE sections

By SPl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Oct 16 - Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh today said that a 30 per cent allocation has been exclusively earmarked for the neglected sections of the North East.

Dr Singh, who was speaking to a Chakma delegation represented by the Committee for Citizenship Rights of the Chakmas and Hajongs of Arunachal Pradesh, said that the North Eastern Council (NEC) had on the advice of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, moved a proposal which was approved of at a Cabinet meeting.

Accordingly, he said that it has been decided that 30 per cent of the NEC allocations for new projects under the existing schemes would be devoted towards development of deprived areas, neglected sections of societies and emerging sectors of the North Eastern States.

Dr Singh said that this would help in the development of the neglected sections of the society in the North East and reduce inter-region and inter-tribe disparity which, in turn, would help in addressing the needs of hitherto neglected sections including the Chakmas. This scheme will also lead to preservation of the cultural diversity of the North East and help in the growth of such scripts and languages, which are gradually becoming extinct.
