JORHAT, Jan 30 - State Assembly Speaker and Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami yesterday inaugurated a CCTV surveillance system at the Jorhat Jorhat Police Station.
Under the initiative named �Project Third Eye�, 32 CCTV cameras have been installed at several prominent places of the town.
The project initiated with the support of local business community, is aimed at curbing crimes by carrying out surveillance on criminals and anti-social elements. Jorhat Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Nimbalkar said the project would also assist in mitigating traffic congestion in Jorhat town apart from enhancing safety and security of the citizens.
It may be mentioned here that last week, in a single night, nine shops were burgled at two different areas (Bongalpukhuri and Jail Road localit�es) of the town.
Prior to that incident, about a fortnight ago, thieves burgled seven shops at Tarajan locality here during night.
In another function held yesterday, which was part of the 70th foundation day celebrations of Village Defence Organisation under Assam Police, painting of railings demarcating the footpaths from the road at Gar-Ali was launched under the aegis of VDP flying squad Jorhat and Jorhat Police Station.
This function was also inaugurated by the Assembly Speaker near the Government parking area at Gar-Ali.
Another function was held at the district library auditorium here to commemorate 70 years of VDP.
