Speaker disallows adjournment motion

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 3 - Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today disallowed two clubbed adjournment motions moved yesterday by the Opposition Congress and AIUDF over alleged police excesses during the CAA protests.

In his ruling, the Speaker said that the subject matter of both the notices which were clubbed relate to one principal issue that the State government has intentionally put certain selected individuals behind bar, thereby infringing their democratic rights as well as fundamental rights provided to the citizens by the Constitution of India

The government is duty bound to maintain peace and tranquility and protect the life and property of the public and individuals. While discharging this responsibility, if an excess or partiality is noticed then judicial remedy is an option, he said.

Noting that the subject matter of CAA is currently sub-judice, the Speaker said certain persons connected with the CAA movement are presently under custody under specific charges of penal code and these persons are approaching the judiciary against their detention and their prayers are under consideration of the court.

The other grievances raised through the Adjournment Motion can be placed through any other procedural device within reasonably short time, he said.
