SP-rank officer likely to fall in

By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - A Superin-tendent of Police-ranked Assam Police officer, who had served as the SP of a district recently, is likely to be arrested soon in connection with the Sub Inspector recruitment scam.

The arrest, according to sources, could open a Pandoras box and send the ongoing investigation to an altogether new dimension.

The investigation into the scam has gathered momentum, and so far, 47 persons have been arrested in connection with the case from across the State.

The Chief Ministers Office and the Home department have been apprised about the developments and they have reportedly given the nod.

If sources are to be believed, Assam Police will soon initiate the process of securing prosecution sanction against the officer, once some other official nitty-gritty is taken care of.

The Assam Tribune has been told to believe that the arrest which looks imminent at this point of time would make way for several arrests in the rank and file of Assam Police.

Investigation has reached a critical stage. Since the arrest of an SP-ranked officer could create a flutter, the investigators have been asked to soft-paddle on the issue for the time being till appropriate instructions are issued, sources told this reporter.

The sources confided that the APS officer in question enjoys close links not just with the Assam Police headquarters but also with the State bureaucracy.

During the course of investigation, it was found that the police officer was in constant touch with some of the arrested accused. Subsequent follow-ups, which cannot be shared in the interest of the investigation, virtually necessitated his arrest, the sources claimed requesting anonymity.

The sources, while insisting on non-disclosure of the name of the officer, also informed that since the stakes are high in the entire scam, the investigators are leaving no stone unturned to make a water-tight case against the accused before arresting them.

Meanwhile, one Manjit Bora was arrested on Sunday by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the case. Bora was a close associated of former DIG and one of the prime accused PK Dutta.

Another person, Jyoti Nath, who is reportedly affiliated with the BJP, was also questioned.

On Sunday evening, PK Dutta was taken to the Assam Polices Special Branch headquarters where he was questioned alongside another accused Dibon Deka by top police officers.

Earlier on Sunday, based on revelations made by those arrested so far, police conducted searches in various locations including Trishna Global Private Ltd, of which arrested accused Saruj Sarma is a director, and seized more than Rs 4 lakh in cash. Two vehicles were also seized.
