South Asian badminton tourney gets off

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 - The maiden edition of the South Asian Regional Badminton Tournament got underway here today.

The championship was inaugurated by Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay in a well attended opening ceremony at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium. Among others present during the occasion were Sports Secretary Sanjib Gohain Baruah, Director of Sports Pabitra Ram Khound and organising vice chairman Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

The DGP while inaugurating the tournament said that the Assam shuttlers have to work hard in order to re-discover its past glory. He also said that Assam became an able host of international sporting events as recently several international meets were successfully organised in Guwahati.

Mahanta in his welcome speech said that the players of all the countries will produce their best performance. Teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives along with hosts India are taking part in the meet.

RESULTS: Bhutan bt Maldives 3-2, India bt Nepal 5-0, Nepal bt Bhutan 5-0, India bt Bangladesh 5-0.
