SOS Village scholarship awarded to 19 students

GUWAHATI, July 5 � SOS Children�s Village, Guwahati under its Family Development Programme conferred Dr Hermann Gmeiner scholarship on 19 meritorious students from economically backward families of south Kamrup area.

The scholarship awarding function was organised on Friday on the SOS Children�s Village premises.

The Director of Social Welfare Rajib Lochan Duwarah, adviser to All Assam Students� Union Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhat-tacharja, members of Child Welfare Committee Sabita Baruah and Rina Borah attended the function.

In the welcome address, the SOS village incharge Prasenjit Das mentioned the steps that were taken to identify the most needy scholars. The school head masters and village heads of the area were involved in the selection process followed by a physical verification by SOS officials.

In his address, Director Social Welfare Duwarah expressed his appreciation about the noble step that SOS has taken to help and encourage the students from economically backward families and that too expanding the working periphery of SOS Children�s Village.

AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhat-tacharjya said that the scholars have proved that external obstruction like economic backwardness can�t pose any threat to a willing heart. He highly appreciated the initiative of SOS and assured AASU�s co-operation with SOS in future course of action, stated a press release.
