Sonowal pleads for a pollution-free Assam

By A Correspondent

NAGAON, Nov 15 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal this evening inaugurated the newly-constructed regional office building of Assam Pollution Control Board here at Nagaons Milanpur area.

Addressing the inaugural function at Milanpur field, Sonowal said that some hundreds of years ago, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva had written A tree is equal to ten sons to make the people aware conscious of maintaining a green and clean atmosphere and had inspired every one to take up tree plantation. But we all ignored those things which he once preached and by doing so, we have invited our doom though we are least aware of it, he said.

Referring to the initiatives taken by his government for a green and clean environment, Sonowal reiterated that during the three and half year tenure of his government, the State Forest department had planted more than five crore trees across the State and also restricted illegal rhino and other wildlife poaching in Kaziranga National Park and other wildlife sanctuaries. He added that due to the strict measures and setting up of fast track trials against those poachers, his government was able to convict 13 poachers and awarded them exemplary punishment.

Pleading for a pollution-free Assam, Sonowal said that his government since the beginning was dedicated to build Assam as a pollution-free State. Appealing to the people of the district, Sonowal said that the people of Nagaon were humble and very conscious and can become a strong part of the efforts for a green and clean Assam if they dedicate themselves to the mission.

Forest and Environment minister, Parimal Suklabaidya and local MLA Rupak Sarma also spoke on the occasion. Former Union Railway Minister for State and senior BJP leader, Rajen Gohain, MLAs Angoorlata Deka, Dimbeswar Das, Ramakanta Deori, Shiladitya Dev, BJP State organising secretary, Phanindranath Sarma and top level officials of the State Pollution Control Board were present in the function.

Earlier, Sonowal also took part in two separate functions held at Kampur and Dhing. He inaugurated a new building of the Dhing police station at Dhing.
