GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed the State Director General of Police (DGP) to revamp the Assam Police and take appropriate steps for its modernisation. In a high-level meeting held here today, Sonowal asked the DGP to go for skill upgradation and modernisation of the State police to prepare it to face all kinds of onslaught professionally, said an official press release here today.
In the face of changing dynamics of crime, modernisation of police has become an inevitability to fortify the police forces to contain crimes and other criminal activities. Sonowal asked the DGP to go for all-out innovations to enable all the wings of the State police to deal with all kinds of exigencies. To increase surveillance on the city areas, Chief Minister asked the police department to bring Guwahati under Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) Camera coverage and operationalise all CCTVs in the city within one month.
Sonowal, moreover, asked the DGP to submit a detailed project report for setting up of a model hospital and Assam Police Public School in line with the ones that have been constructed for Indian Army. He also directed the police department to introduce forensic science programme in Assam in the same module prepared and taught by Gujarat Forensic Science University.
The Chief Minister also asked the DGP to revamp Village Defence Parties (VDPs) and bring char areas and other interior areas completely within the purview of VDPs. For empowerment of women and enabling them to handle any injustice perpetrated on them, Sonowal stressed on including at least five women into VDP units. He also advocated for observing Village Defence Party Day on January 29 in a befitting manner so that the observance becomes a source of inspiration for the VDP personnel. He also asked for bringing out a souvenir christened as Ahuti depicting the sacrifices of Harinarayan Baruah and other protagonists of VDP. Chief Minister also mooted the idea of publishing a booklet incorporating all inputs that Assam Police put in for investigating and controlling corruption.
